The Benefits of Mulch and Why You Should Incorporate it Into Your Landscape

We love that The Home Depot calls it the “humble mulch.” It’s true, there are so many benefits that mulch offers without being too flashy! It ties up the yard as the perfect finishing touch. Not to mention, your surrounding plants will become best friends with it, too. Here’s why —

mulch conserves water

Water conservation is always a focus here at Golden Palm Landscape. We always encourage clients to utilize mulch when they can. The way mulch conserves water is that it naturally has the ability to retain moisture, allowing you to water your yard less. Some clients benefit more from installing an drip system near where the mulch is laid down so that you get the most out of the water conservation; different types of mulch such don’t retain water as well, so a drip system allows the water to sit and soak for a longer period of time.

mulch offers nutrients to surrounding plants

It’s always the cherry on top when a product is multi faceted. Mulch not is not only beneficial to you, but also to surrounding plants. Mulch is temporary since it decomposes. As it biodegrades, it offers amazing nutrients—the biggest one being nitrogen. If you are looking to leverage its nutrients, we suggest placing mulch near your garden for extra support and love.

In addition, mulch is a home for earthworms, which are extremely beneficial to any landscape! (Note: earthworms are a sign of health!) For mulch, their presence is helpful because they help support a healthy air and water flow as they crawl around and create airways. Earthworms offer nutrients as well through releasing their castings that are then used as a fertilizer for your mulch.

mulch creates a cutting edge landscape

It’s that simple: mulch makes your yard look good. Who doesn’t want that? If you’re going for simple or extravagant, mulch is a great choice. It’s easy to maintain, making it easier for you to achieve effortless beauty. In addition, mulch is diverse in color; a darker color may be more well suited for a modern, clean look, while a lighter colored bark might compliment a more organic look. Whatever you choose, we guarantee mulch will help you create a sharp, clean, and stunning landscape.

mulch offers winter and protection

A winter landscape is always a challenge. You begin to notice some plants as more weather tolerant than others and once again, mulch comes to the rescue! It is able to balance the temperature of surrounding plants by keeping the soil warm and cozy during the winter time. When putting down mulch near plants, make sure to never make a mountain, as this can invite pests. Instead, lay it down in a circular shape, keeping it only about two to three inches deep.

mulch: “goodbye weeds!”

Are you tired of constantly pulling weeds? Mulch has no tolerance for them either! Adding mulch will basically block any opportunity for weeds to grow and if they do, it will be really easy to pull them out. The elimination of weeds gives you an extremely low maintenance landscape, while still gifting you immense beauty, nutrition, and plenty of other benefits.
